PQI Air Drive Review – Regular gg readers will probably remember that not so long ago we tested the Seagate GoFlex Satellite, an external hard drive with a Wi-Fi interface. Today we have its’ colleague in the workshop ”in our test lab – the PQI AirDrive.

PQI AirDrive specifications

Type: external storage with Wi-Fi.

  • Interfaces: USB 2.0, 802.11 b / g / n.
  • Volume: SD card with 16 or 32 GB volume included.
  • Dimensions: 85x54x8 mm.
  • Weight: 55 grams.

Appearance and design

Unlike the Seagate GoFlex Satellite, PQI AirDrive does not use a hard drive. Instead, the device has a slot for SD / SDHC memory cards (a 10th class memory card with a volume of 16 or 32 GB is provided). This made the device truly miniature: its dimensions in length and width correspond to a plastic card, and the thickness of the metal case is only 6 mm.

Even in a branded leather pouch (sold separately), the PQI AirDrive fits neatly into a shirt pocket. For connection to a computer, AirDrive is equipped with a full-size USB connector which when folded hides completely in the body of the device, so you don’t need to carry a cable with you.

Working with the reader

Before using PQI AirDrive, you need to write some information in it. You can do this directly through the drive itself (by plugging it into your computer’s USB port) or write data to a memory card through a separate card reader and then insert it into AirDrive. After turning on the device, it will appear in the list of available wireless networks after a few seconds.

AirDrive supports up to 5 simultaneous clients. To use it, you need a special S + Flash app, which is available both in the App Store and on Google Play. The application can display both a complete list of files and sort them by type (music, video, photos). Unfortunately, ID3 tags of music files cannot be read, so the best kind of sorting when doing AirDrive usage is to manually sort music into folders. The app also allows you to change the player settings (network ID, password, etc.).

To our surprise, you can open not only music and videos, but also all files supported by the device (for example, PDF or DOC). In general, everything works smoothly, the Wi-Fi bandwidth is sufficient to stream 1080p videos in real time. The manufacturer claims that the charge of the built-in battery should be sufficient for 5 hours of continuous operation. In our testing, the player lasted 4 hours and 48 minutes of video streaming, which is close to the stated value.

In the dry residue

In our opinion, PQI AirDrive is a useful accessory for iOS devices (they are not known to support memory cards). The most obvious use is to watch videos on the go. At the same time, unlike the Seagate GoFlex Wireless, the PQI AirDrive requires no space in the bag, weighs next to nothing, and isn’t afraid to shake.

The small capacity partly compensates for the ability to swap out memory cards (i.e. you can get multiple cards, write the necessary files to them, and change them just on the go). Of course, no one cares to use the reader as a regular flash drive or a card reader. In general, a useful thing no matter how you look at it.

5 reasons to buy PQI AirDrive: small size and weight;

  • stable work;
  • fast memory card included;
  • the possibility of using it as a card reader for a PC;
  • integrated USB cable.

2 reasons not to buy an AirDrive PQI: heating during operation;

  • ID3 tags are not recognized in music files.
